NORMANDY HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR ACCUMULATES OVER 1200 HOURS IN COMMUNITY SERVICE

Normandy High School senior Shawnese Ringo received recognition for her volunteerism during the Class of 2010's Honors Convocation.

June 3, 2010, NORMANY NEWS , Provided by Charlene Goston - "My time is the best thing that I can give," said Normandy High School senior Shawnese Ringo. Ringo doesn't just "talk the talk" but "walks the walks," having accumulated over 1200 hours of community service as a member of the Class of 2010. The district requires 40 hours as a requirement to graduating.

Over the past four years Ringo has spent time volunteering with the Obama for President campaign, at her church-All Saints Southern Baptist, with the school's GEAR-UP program assisting coordinators in arranging and implementing activities and programs for juniors, and through various other services in the district and community.

Ringo says she gets her motivation for volunteering from her mother and grandmother. Often times she tags along with them and participates in the many volunteer projects they do. Ringo's mother, Sheron Chaney, is president of the high school's Parent/Teacher/Student Organization (PTSO), and Ringo volunteers as the organization's secretary. She says many of the 1200-plus volunteer hours she's accumulated have been accomplished during her junior and senior years.

Graduating in the top 10% of her class, Ringo also spends a lot of time at school participating in extra-curricular activities such as the Robotics Team, Mock Trial, journalism club, yearbook and as a member of the National Honor Society. Some of her volunteer hours were also accumulated through her participation in these organizations and activities, going above and beyond what's expected as a member.

And, Ringo's summer is already planned. She has been accepted to participate in a two-month internship at the NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, AL. During this time she will participate and complete multiple projects, and shadow engineers and astronauts - all in preparation for a career in engineering.

In the fall, Ringo will attend Ball State University in Muncie, IN to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. She plans to continue her volunteer service during her collegiate years and beyond.

"If you've got 'free time' you're missing opportunities," said Ringo. "Find something to do. Time passes quickly -- you'll loose it and can't get it back."
