World Percussion Theatre
A World of "Cultural Interconnection" Through the Drum
From Producer
Terry Artis

Did you know that the drum is the single musical instrument that every culture around the world has in common? Each culture has their own types of the instrument, but they all have the drum and it is also the oldest known musical instrument in our world.
These ideas were at the center of our recent production of "World Percussion Theatre" at the Sheldon Concert Hall. The show was presented by the Show-Me Sound Organization (presenters of the SHOWDOWN: Historically Black College & University DRUMLINE Show and Recruitment Fair), produced by (yours truly) and hosted by City of St. Louis License Collector Michael McMillan (RiverCity Examiner's 2009 "Public Servant of the Year" and the "Honorary Drum Major" of the SHOWDOWN).
World Percussion Theatre celebrates cultural interconnection through the drum. It presents different cultures of drummers representing different approaches to drumming, from the different continents of Europe, Africa, South America and North America. It's not about "diversity," which is a term that has been made invalid by those who interpret it to mean: a happy Black person working in an all White environment with a possible Asian or Hispanic in the background. This is about how we as different people connect through our commonalities. THIS IS REAL and it is true beauty.
The show brings together over 60 performers, playing over 75 different percussion instruments. As all Show-Me Sound presentations are, it was perfect for people of all ages and cultures and affordable for everyone at just $10. World Percussion Theatre will return to the Sheldon in July of 2011. Stay tuned.
